Even if Kitiara wasn't evil and wasn't aging much faster than him, Tanis still should have chosen Laurana. Yes, Laurana was a little immature in the first book, but even in that book she was a total sweetheart who demonstrated a lot of great qualities beyond her incredible beauty. She stayed faithful to Tanis all the years he was away (showing she was a loyal partner who honored her commitments), greeted Tanis incredibly passionately (showing she was an affectionate and enthusiastic partner), was very generous and kind towards Tika (showing she was a warm, kind-hearted person), demonstrated impressive skill in following the Companions to Pax Tharkas, performed well on the Pax Tharkas mission itself (impressing Tanis with how brave she was being and fighting capably during the breakout), and never displayed any of the racism or classism that were so prevalent amongst the Qualinesti elves at that time. Thus even before Tanis knew Kitiara was a Dragon Highlord, it should have been obvious to him that Laurana was a wonderful woman and the only choice. (And of course Laurana only grew more and more capable and heroic as the story continued.)
