The Night's Watch is a military order which holds and guards the Wall to keep
the wildlings and White Walkers from crossing into the Seven Kingdoms.
the Night's Watch was founded 8,000 years ago. They now protect the
Seven Kingdoms from threats beyond their northern border, such as
White Walkers, wildlings and giants. They man a vast structure known
as the Wall, a 700 foot tall and 300-mile long barrier which separates
the Seven Kingdoms from the lands to the north. It is formed mostly from ice
with small trenches and wooden fortifications covering the top.

The Watch have built nineteen castles along the southern edge of the Wall
to house their men, however, over the years many were abandoned.
They also control a region south of the Wall known as the Gift, from which
they obtain supplies and provisions. The region was donated to them by
House Stark, the Kings in the North, at the

The Night's Watch is organized in three departments: the Rangers,
who fight, defend the Wall and patrol the Haunted Forest; the Builders,
who maintain the Wall and the castles; and the Stewards, who support
and feed the members of the Watch.

"Before long I'll be dead, and you and your brother and your sister and all of her children, all of us dead, all of us rotting in the ground. It's the family name that lives on. It's all that lives on. Not your personal glory, not your honor... but family."
―Tywin Lannister to his eldest son, Jaime

Lord Tywin Lannister was the head of House Lannister, Lord of Casterly Rock, Warden of the West, Lord Paramount of the Westerlands, Hand of the King for three different kings, and Protector of the Realm. He is the father of Cersei, Jaime, and Tyrion Lannister, and sole grandfather of the incest-born Joffrey, Myrcella, and Tommen Baratheon.

"We've had vicious kings and we've had idiot kings, but I don't know if we've ever been cursed with a vicious idiot for a king."

―Tyrion Lannister to his nephew King Joffrey Baratheon

King Joffrey I Baratheon is a major character in the first, second, third, and fourth seasons. Though believed by most to be the eldest son of King Robert Baratheon and Queen Cersei Lannister, Joffrey is actually a bastard born from Cersei's incestuous relationship with her twin brother, Ser Jaime Lannister of the Kingsguard. He is the older brother of Myrcella Baratheon and Tommen Baratheon, both of whom share the same parentage with Cersei and Jaime Lannister.
He is the Grandson of Tywin Lannister and the Nephew of Tyrion Lanister.

"The night is dark and full of terrors, old man, but the fire burns them all away."

―Melisandre, to Cressen

The Red Woman is the closest adviser of Stannis Baratheon and servant of the Lord of Light. She is opposed by Ser Davos who is a loyal follower of Stannis and a friend of his daughter. ―Cersei Lannister to Eddard Stark

Cersei Lannister is the only daughter and eldest child of Lord Tywin Lannister of Casterly Rock and his wife, Lady Joanna Lannister. She is the twin of her younger brother, Ser Jaime Lannister. In the television adaptation Game of Thrones Cersei is played by Lena Headey, and is portrayed by Nell Williams in a Season 5 flashback.
After Robert's Rebellion, Cersei married King Robert IBaratheon and became Queen of the Seven Kingdoms. She is the mother of Prince Joffrey, Princess Myrcella, and Prince Tommen of House Baratheon of King's Landing.

―Robb Stark

Robb Stark is the eldest son of Eddard Stark and CatelynTully and is the heir of House Stark to Winterfell and the north. He is called the Young Wolf by friend and foe alike.

His siblings are Sansa, Arya, Bran and Rickon. John Snow is his cousin and Theon Greyjoy is for a time hims closest friend. He is killed by Walder Frey and Roose Bolton at the infamous Red Wedding.

"I did what I had to do to survive, my lady. But I am a Stark, I will always be a Stark."

―Sansa to Lyanna Mormont

Sansa was born and raised at Winterfell. She has an older brother, Robb, two younger brothers, Bran
and Rickon, a younger sister, Arya and a "bastard half-brother" Jon Snow, whom she had a distant relationship with due to her mother's influence (which, like her mother, Sansa later regretted). Sansa enjoys proper "lady-like" pursuits, and is good at sewing, embroidering, poetry, singing, dancing, literature and music. When she was young she dreamed of being a regal Queen like Cersei Lannister, and that just like in the epic songs she would meet her knight in shining armor. She has inherited her mother's Tully coloring, unlike most of her siblings, and Lady Catelyn thinks Sansa will be even more beautiful than she was when she was younger. She is often seen in contrast with her sister, Arya Stark who has neither her looks nor her accomplishments in feminine activities and comportment.

"What wife would do the things I've done for you? What wife would trust you the way I've trusted you? When you gave me those drops and told me to pour them into Jon's wine. My husband's wine. And you told me to write a letter to Cat telling her it was the Lannisters..."

"Chaos isn’t a pit. Chaos is a ladder. Many who try to climb it fail, and never get to try again. The fall breaks them. And some are given a chance to climb, but refuse. They cling to the realm, or love, or the gods... illusions. Only the ladder is real. The climb is all there is. " ―Petyr Baelish to Varys

Lord Petyr Baelish, popularly called Littlefinger, was the Master of Coin on the Small Council. He is a skilled manipulator and uses his ownership of brothels in King's Landing to both accrue intelligence on political rivals and acquire vast wealth. Baelish's spy network is eclipsed only by that of Varys. After marrying Lady Lysa Tully, widow of Lord Jon Arryn of the Vale, and her subsequent death at his hand, he becomes the Lord Protector of the Vale. Because of his relationship with Robin's mother, Baelish is able to heavily influence the young Lord Robin Arryn, the new Lord Paramount of the Vale. More
